Bible Trivia: Ernest Goes to War

In Judges 1:19, the warriors of Judah were foiled despite god’s presence because their enemy had:

A.  an agreement with satan

B.  built a great wall

C.  chariots fitted with iron

D.  the ark of the covenant

I always picture the ancient times as the movie 300

 ANSWER:  C

19 The Lord was with the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had chariots fitted with iron.

THE BREAKDOWN:
pictured above:  how to build a machine to defeat god

Is it just iron that god cannot defeat?  Because if it's all hard metals then the devil only needs to take out a lease on a Toyota Camry to give god a serious go.

I'll take mine in Barcelona Metallic Red

This is the only recorded event in the bible in which god is defeated.

Biblegateway.com explains it this way:

"Such chariots, with their wooden wheels overlaid with iron, were powerful weapons, especially on the level plains. In effect, Judah is excused for failing to dislodge the Canaanites."

Matthew Henry, a 16th century Christian minister, explains it this way:

"They had iron chariots, and therefore it was thought not safe to attack them: but had not Israel God on their side, whose chariots are thousands of angels (Ps. 68:17), before whom these iron chariots would be but as stubble to the fire? Had not God expressly promised by the oracle (Jdg. 1:2) to give them success against the Canaanites in this very expedition, without excepting those that had iron chariots? Yet they suffered their fears to prevail against their faith, they could not trust God under any disadvantages, and therefore durst not face the iron chariots, but meanly withdrew their forces, when with one bold stroke they might have completed their victories; and it proved of pernicious consequence."

So by the logic provided, it wasn't god's failure but it was Judah's.  But why would Judah fail?  Why would Judah suddenly lose his faith in the face of iron chariots? He just spent the previous months slaughtering the Canaanites and Perizzites at Bezek, Jerusalem, Negez, Hebron, Debir, Zephath, Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron.

Judah kicked butt in the lower green region

He never suffered a defeat.  Not once.  Yet, after killing a hundred thousand people with the power of god on his side, he suddenly becomes fearful of chariots?

Why an all knowing god would choose someone with a weak faith to represent him is a real head scratcher.
